Course Materials
You have two options for course materials.
The PADI Open Water Diver Crewpack is the standard materials package that provides your logbook, student record file, dive computer simulator, and the PADI Open Water Diver Manual that you will use to complete your knowledge reviews. An optional video is available for rental. You need to obtain this package from the store or have it mailed to you at least a week before the start date of your course.
The PADI Open Water Diver Touch Certification Pack is an iOS or Android application that can be downloaded to a device. The app provides the same information as the paper manual and incorporates video and animation to provide a multimedia experience. The app does not expire and updates are free for life. If you choose the app you can start your SCUBA training as soon as we send you your digital authorization code. You will also need a Digital Enhancement Crewpack. This Crewpack includes the physical materials you will need for class including your student record file, logbook, etc. You can pick this package up anytime prior to the start of your course.
Pool Training
Your pool training sessions will last between 2 and 4 hours long. You will need to be comfortable in your pool for that amount of time. If your pool is not a heated pool and you are concerned about getting cold, we will provide you with a rental wetsuit or help you select a new one to use during your training.
Our training standards require that we use a pool with water "too deep to stand up in." For an adult that would be 7 feet or over. For a child that could be as shallow as 5 feet. Our training staff will evaluate your pool to insure that it meets training standards and will discuss other options if needed.
Checkout Dives
Checkout dives are conducted locally at one of our many dive parks. Your instructor will bring all your equipment to the dive site for you and will return it to the shop for you. The Concierge Referral option is designed for those that would like to do their checkout dives in a dive destination or on a dive trip. Ask about taking your instructor with you to your destination!

Occasionally a student starts an Open Water Diver course in one location and completes it in another. This is known as a referral. PADI dive centers have an established procedure to hand off a student from one operator to another. This process reduces stress and frustration for the students.
Scenario 1: Local classroom/pool and remote checkouts
You start your PADI Open Water Diver certification course with Pats Locker in Illinois. You complete the pool work and course work and would like to do your checkout dives in Haigue Quarry. We will document the portions of the course you have completed and give you a referral form along with a copy of your medical statement.
You will take that paperwork to a PADI Instructor or dive center at your destination and make arrangements for your checkout dives. The dive center and instructor that completes your checkout dives will be the certifying dive center and instructor and will be responsible for processing your certification.
If you inform us that your intention is to do a referral then we will charge you the referral rate when you sign up for class. If we are giving you a referral because you were unable to complete your checkout dives before your trip departure date there are no refunds for the checkout dives but we do not charge for the referral.
Scenario 2: Remote classroom/pool and local checkouts
If you started a PADI Open Water Diver certification course at another dive center and would like to complete your checkout dives with Pats Locker we will review your referral paperwork and determine if a referral is appropriate. You have one year to complete your certification course from the time you start. If more than a year has passed you will need start the course again from the beginning.
Depending on how much time has passed you may be required to enroll in a refresher course before proceeding to checkout dives. We want to make sure that you have the best possible experience and that you are prepared for your checkout dives and sometimes that requires some review. A refresher gives you a chance to meet your instructor and it gives your an instructor the opportunity to review with you the skills you will need for your checkout dives.
Note:
Referrals offer flexibility and convenience and are a great options for divers who do not want to dive in Hauge Quarry. However, referrals almost always add to the cost of a certification course. Please ask one of our training counselors for more details if you think you may need a referral. answer to this item.
Not at all! We have students as young as 10 learn to dive so anyone can do it. If you need some extra attention in class, we offer private classes too. It's very rare that someone does not get certified.
You have to be 10 yrs old to get certified. For the younger kids, check out our Seal Team and Bubblemaker classes.
